What people are saying about Kakadu software:

Jim Reid from Xerox writes:

"I am very impressed with how well thought out the Kakadu design is and [Dr. Taubman's] grasp of object-oriented programming. It's going to take some time for me to understand a lot of the concepts, but the code is extremely well-documented. Based on my analysis on all the JPEG 2000 implementations out there, Kakadu is *by far* the best solution."

License Descriptions

Non-Commercial

The license is granted to an individual where the licencee receives no commercial and/or financial benefit. This license may not be transferred to or shared with other individuals.

This license is sufficient for:

a) "The distribution of one or more applications, compiled from the Kakadu
source code, not for financial return" -- neither the distribution nor the
use of such applications should be for financial return, unless the end user
has a suitable license.

b) "Personal use of the software" -- this includes personal use for both
the compilation and deployment of applications by the licensee.

Applications developed using a non-commercial license may be distributed free of charge to others.

Reusable code developed using the license may be distributed only to other license holders

Non-Commercial - Library

This license is a non-commercial license for university libraries which already own a copy of the book, "JPEG2000: Image Compression Fundamentals, Standards and Practice" by Taubman and Marcellin.

The license covers all current students and staff of the university, for the duration of the enrollment or employment, as appropriate.

The terms of the license are otherwise identical to those of the individual non-commercial license. Note that the book comes with an individual (not a library) license to version 2.2 of the Kakadu software tools, whereas the library license here includes upgrades.

Commercial licenses

Where the licencee receives commercial and/or financial benefit.

Any number of applications may be built using any or all of the Kakadu software tools and distributed for financial return.

Reusable code (including source code) may also be developed using the tools and exchanged with other license holders for financial return.

Commercial license pricing is based on the number of the licencee's employees and individual contractors. The break points are upto 25, 100, 250 and more than 250 employees and individual contractors.

version S6.x Speed Pack

This license is for the S6.x Speed Pack optional module and requires an existing Version 6.x license.

Overview:

Applications developed using speed-pack versions of Kakadu may be deployed by a limited number of users, or on a limited number of machines, the relevant limit being known as the `deployment quota'. Licensees may increase their quota at any time, by pre-purchasing quota increments in lots of 200 for generic applications and 100 for medical or cinema applications.

The licensee is at liberty to choose either a per-machine or a per-user basis for their quota, depending on the preferred mode of deployment or on-licensing of applications. Speed-pack licensing provisions also allow for the licensee to pass some or all of their quota on to third party developers through the inclusion of Kakadu capabilities in software development kits and the like.

Deployment Description:

Deployment and On-Licensing activities covered by the Kakadu Speed Pack license agreement are governed by a Deployment Quota. In order to obtain a Speed Pack license, you need to purchase a minimum Deployment Quota for any of the fields of deployment mentioned below.

Thereafter, you can augment your deployment quota at any time, by the purchase of additional increments. You may do this in the exactly the same way that you purchase your initial Deployment Quota, via the e-commerce or invoice-based approaches found on the Kakadu purchase page [link].

If required, it may be possible to negotiate a reduced rate for much larger quota increments, directly with NewSouth Innovations [link to contacts page].

Upon purchase of an initial Kakadu Speed Pack Deployment Quota, your license number for speed pack distributions will remain the same as your existing basic Commercial Kakadu license number. With the purchase of each new quota increment, you should receive an updated distribution message, with details of how you can verify your current deployment quota.

Fields of Deployment:

1) Speed Pack - Medical:
Covers the deployment of Applications built using the Kakadu Speed Pack software, for use within the medical industry, including generation, archival, interactive transmission and display of JPEG2000 compressed imagery for medical purposes. Examples include the use of Kakadu Speed Pack software in Applications deployed in hospitals, radiology clinics and practitioners' offices.

A single Deployment Instance in this field of deployment corresponds either to a single computing platform, potentially operated by multiple users but only one at a time, or to a single end-user, potentially operating the Application on multiple computing platforms but only one at a time. Examples of computing platforms include large multi-processor computing systems, desktop computers and mobile or handheld computing devices.

Deployment of a medical/video image server based on the Kakadu Speed Pack software would also be interpreted as a single Deployment Instance, even though the server might serve multiple clients simultaneously -- these clients are not interpreted as simultaneous end-users, since they do not "operate" the Application.

2) Speed Pack - Cinema:

Covers the deployment of Applications built using the Kakadu Speed Pack software, for use within the cinema industry, including production, editing, distribution and reproduction of digital cinema content.

A single Deployment Instance in this field of deployment corresponds either to a single computing platform, potentially operated by multiple users but only one at a time, or to a single end-user, potentially operating the Application on multiple computing platforms but only one at a time.

The use of Kakadu Speed Pack software for the reproduction of cinema content within a single cinema theatre, using only a single computing platform, would constitute a single Deployment Instance. Similarly, the operation of a digital cinema editing or post-production system which uses the kakadu Speed Pack software, by a single user (or where the software is installed on only a single machine) would constitute a single Deployment Instance.

As in the Medical case, an image/video server for use within the cinema industry would also be interpreted as a single Deployment Instance.

3) Speed Pack - Other:
Covers the deployment of Applications built using the Kakadu Speed Pack software, for use within industry areas other than the cinema and medical industries mentioned above.

A single Deployment Instance in this field of deployment corresponds either to a single computing platform, potentially operated by a multiple users but only one at a time, or to a single end-user, potentially operating the Aplication on multiple computing platforms but only one at a time.

As in the Medical and Cinema cases, an image/video server based on the Kakadu Speed Pack software would also be interpreted as a single Deployment Instance.
